The History
The N-1B traces back to military specification MIL-B-6362, first appearing in the mid-1960s before being formalized in its current Revision F in 1976, with a further amendment in 1978. Built for flying and ground crews operating in dry cold conditions below 15°F, the boot pairs a rugged canvas upper with a thick, insulated rubber sole — designed to be worn over a separate wool or felt liner for maximum warmth. Nicknamed the "Mukluk" for its resemblance to traditional Arctic footwear, it became a staple of cold-weather military kit for decades, valued for being lighter and more flexible than the all-rubber "bunny boot" alternative while still holding up in genuinely brutal winter conditions.
