Original WWII USMC M1941 / P41 (2nd Pattern) Canteen Cover — Lift-the-Dot Snaps, Khaki Canvas, Hand-Marked “412” in UNIS-Style Layout
An original WWII-period Marine Corps canteen cover in the collectors’ 2nd Pattern, also known as the M1941 or P41. This is not a reproduction. It’s made of heavy khaki cotton canvas and is unlined, and the flap edges are bound with khaki tape. Two rounded flaps each close to a Lift-the-Dot snap fastener on their own side, so the flaps do not cross. The snaps are blackened caps with brass-colored ball-top studs. A wire belt hook sits on a khaki webbing tab mounted high on the back, and a vertical seam runs down the center of the back.
The front carries a hand-applied black ink “412,” with an arch above and a flat bar below. Together they form the half-circle layout of the Marine Corps’ WWII Unit Numerical Identification System (UNIS) markings. The ink has faded and reads blue-gray in places. By collector decoding of the 4th Marine Division system, 412 corresponds to Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines. This is a collector interpretation and is not confirmed for this cover, and no owner has been identified. No rank digit is visible above the arch.
